Sheriff Ronald L. Nichols, Ross County Sheriff
On June 17 & 18, 2002 Sheriff Nichols of the Ross County Sheriff Department sponsored the 2 day class.
Each day the class lasted 4 hours. Sheriff Nichols added to the last day of the course where the motorist were able
to ride a golf cart with special goggles that gave them the effect that they had been drinking.
Although the legal blood amount is 1.0, the goggles gave you the effect of 0.8. One woman who placed the goggles
on before getting in the cart had trouble getting up in the cart. It was a very informative and challenging event.
This course is used on the teens thru DARE to teach them the bad points of driving under the influence.
The class room course will refresh your driving skills and techniques that we over the years sometimes
forget to use. The course will also teach you new approaches and concepts, including compensating for normal
age related physical changes that effect your driving.
You will go over things like;
- Judging yourself- reaction time and quick calls
- Physical changes-vision, hearing, medication & alcohol
- Potential trouble spots-car phones, backing up, blind spots, skidding, hydroplaning, backing up
and car crime.
- Aggressive driving-Road rage ~controlling your driving, being confronted by aggressive drivers.
- Safety Considerations, safe distance, stopped school bus, scanning ahead & protecting yourself
in a crash.
- Driver Guidance- signs, traffic signals, left turns, lane use, pavement markers and other hazards.
- Your Vehicle- buying a safe car, airbags, anti-lock brakes and safety belts.
- Intersections-right of way ,left turn, series of right turns, and intersection plans.
- Freeway-preparation, entering ,safe freeway driving, semis and buses.
- Driving retirement-why relatives or friends should stop. Local transportation services.
MOST insurance companies will give you a deduction on your insurance premium for taking this course.
Trooper Leigh Thompson from The Ohio State Highway Patrol was there to help out in
